LEE COUNTY MASTER PLAN
As one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Alabama, Lee County faces unique challenges caused by not only normal growth patterns but also those caused by the KIA plant and BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure).
To devise ways to address current and future growth and to assess the county's needs for the next 20 years, the Lee County Commission began the process of developing a Master Plan in March 2008. In May of that same year a consultant group, Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood was selected to develop the county's first Master Plan to address the concerns of the county. To assist in the development of the plan, the Commission created the Lee County Planning Commission as authorized by Act 2007-477. Comprised of 11 members from throughout the County, the Planning Commission is responsible for ensuring the needs of the citizens are met and the plan is followed.
Included in the Master Plan were various elements such as Transportation, Land Use, Community and Cultural Facilities, Economic Development, Historic Preservation, Community Design, Housing, Infrastructure and Intergovernmental Coordination.
The Master Plan itself is a citizen-driven plan and all aspects of the plan had significant citizen input. To ensure citizen's voices were heard regarding their thoughts on the future of Lee County two rounds of Town Hall Meetings were held. Input from those meetings helped to shape the plan's goals, objectives and recommendations.
The plan is still being developed and should be approved by both the Planning Commission and County Commission by May 2010. A draft version of the plan presented at an Open House in April 2010 can be found here. A conceptual framework developed for the plan can be found here.
More information regarding the Master Plan including the results of each Town Hall Meeting can be found at www.leeco.us/masterplan.
