Motor vehicle registrations and titles are handled through the Lee County Revenue Commissioner's Office. The Revenue Commissioner is one of the primary contacts with local government for many residents of Lee County. Most residents have some type of activity with this office through the registration of vehicles.
Prior to October 2003, Lee County used the Tax Assessor/Tax Collector/Probate Office system for motor vehicle registration. This system required a visit to three different offices to obtain a license plate. If a title was involved, it sometimes required a visit to Probate twice. To say this system was sometimes chaotic is an understatement.
Lee County voters went to the polls in November 2000 and overwhelmingly voted to combine the offices of Tax Assessor and Tax Collector into the office of Revenue Commissioner. The Revenue Commissioner also assumed responsibility for motor vehicle title and registration, making it possible to go to one office, and write one check for car tags.
